One in three UK households limiting appliance use as energy costs become top environmental concern

  • Energy costs are now the UK’s biggest environmental concern, according to one of the largest global studies of its kind
  • One in three Brits say they are cutting back on appliance use to manage rising bills
  • Many households are handwashing clothes and dishes, rather than using appliances, believing it’ll save them money

British households are feeling the strain of rising energy costs, with new research showing that while many are working hard to cut their bills, confusion around everyday appliance use means simple, built‑in savings are being overlooked.

According to new findings from Beko's Smart Living Index - one of the largest global studies of its kind - UK consumers cite energy costs as their number‑one environmental concern, with one in three saying they are now limiting how often they use household appliances in an effort to manage rising bills.

Beko's Smart Living Index tracks how consumers across 12 countries view sustainability and how energy use is evolving, it also looks at how consumers are using smart appliances within their own homes.

The research reveals that many UK households are switching to manual alternatives for everyday chores - such as drying laundry on the line (62%) or hand washing the dishes (58%) - believing these methods are cheaper.

In reality, eco programmes on modern appliances are typically more efficient, using lower temperatures, less water and less energy over longer cycles.

The study also highlights a significant trust barrier preventing consumers from letting AI support household chores, with less than a fifth (17%) of UK consumers saying they trust AI‑powered appliances.

Concerns around a higher purchase cost (51%) and data privacy and security (39%) were cited as the main reasons that prevent many from using smart or automated features on home appliances to their full potential.

As a result, households are often relying on guesswork rather than the built‑in guidance their appliances can provide.

Teresa Arbuckle, Regional Managing Director – UK & Ireland at Beko, said:

“British consumers are feeling the impact of rising energy costs more strongly than ever. While many are taking steps to reduce their bills, our research shows there is still uncertainty around how to use appliances in the most efficient way.”

“At Beko, we believe everyone should have access to options that reduce environmental impact without adding financial pressure. As a global leader in home appliances, we have a responsibility to lead the way. By designing products that use less energy and water, and by making eco settings simpler and more intuitive, we're helping households save money without compromising on performance or convenience.”

“At a time when energy costs are the UK's biggest environmental concern, the priority is giving people the tools and confidence to save energy the smart way.”
